England and Wales Pitted in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by rugby legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts will face off in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a major early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw mirrors their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' surprise early exit.

Key Pool Pairings

The Irish alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in France, round out that same group.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and world number one the Springboks until the final, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

If the groups play out in line with the current world rankings, other top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and the Irish all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on that half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the competition.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
